Shepherd's Scene with a Shepherd Milking a Goat, Philipp Peter Roos Rosa di Tivoli 1657–1706. Overall tones are browns and dark blues. The surface is fully composed; focal point is a cow standing at the back and a group of five animals three sheep and two goats filling the right side. On the right, a seated shepherd in a sheepskin coat and hat milks a cow into a wooden bucket. Next to a goat is a small white kid. At the front a dog laps water from a shallow pond. In the right background, city buildings are visible on a hill; the dark sky is covered with puffy clouds. In the upper corner is the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli. Several identical faces of sheep and rams appear. Attributed to Philipp Peter Roos born August 30, 1657, Sankt Goar; died January 17, 1706, Rome. 18th century, Italy. Overdoor; height 91.0 cm, width 127.0 cm., A painted scene framed by an ornate white decorative border shows a group of farm animals and a seated man; the animals include several sheep and goats with woolly coats in shades of white, cream, beige, brown, and darker tones, a large brown cow, and a darker goat in shadow, while a dog with light fur is drinking from a small pool. The seated man wears a wide-brimmed hat and darker clothing with brown and muted red tones and appears among the animals against a backdrop of a cloudy sky with blue and gray hues and distant darker greenish landscape forms. The overall palette includes brown, white, cream, beige, dark green, blue, gray, and muted red, with the ornate frame in white surrounding the painting.
