Shepherd's Scene with a Shepherd Milking a Goat, by Philipp Peter Roos 1657–1706. The overall tones are browns and dark blues. The surface is fully composed, the focal point is a cow standing at the back and a group of five animals—three sheep and two goats—filling the right side of the scene. On the right, a seated shepherd in a sheepskin coat and hat milks a cow into a wooden bucket. Next to a goat is a small white kid. At the front a dog laps water from a shallow pond. On the right background, city buildings are visible on a hill; the dark sky is covered with puffy clouds. In the upper corner is the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli. Several identical faces of sheep and rams appear. Attributed to Philipp Peter Roos Rosa di Tivoli, born August 30, 1657 in Sankt Goar, died January 17, 1706 in Rome. 18th century, Italy. Overdoor; height 91.0 cm, width 127.0 cm., A painted scene set within an ornate white frame shows a group of farm animals and a seated man; visible animals include several sheep and goats with woolly coats, a large brown cow with horns, and a few smaller goats grazing or standing, all rendered in muted browns, creams, whites, and grays. The seated man wears a dark hat and rustic clothing in brown and earthy tones and appears among the animals against a dark, cloudy sky with hints of blue and green in the background. The decorative frame around the painting is carved with scrollwork and floral motifs in white with touches of pale green along the outer edges.
