Shepherd's Scene - Jacob Preparing to Escape from Laban, unknown artist. The painting depicts a genre scene against a background of wooded hills and rocks. The sky is overcast, the whole in shades of brown, in a two-part composition, without a central scene. On the left, a sleeping man in a red coat, long boots, and a hat; nearby are a cow, a goat, sheep, and a rooster. On the right, a donkey laden with farm implements; next to him are a bent-over man and a kneeling woman in a brick-red skirt, white blouse, and sandals, preparing food in metal vessels; beside them is a spotted dog. The painting is a late, dilettante imitation of the late Renaissance studio in Bassano del Grappa, founded by Jacopo Bassano 1510–1592. Associated with the Bassano workshop. Created in the 18th century. A naive, folk transformation of Mannerist religious painting from the Venetian art scene, intended for provincial churches and chapels. From different painters, as they differ in formal features. 18th century, Italy, painting, overdoor; height 95.0 cm, width 129.0 cm., A dimly lit landscape scene shows a hazy sky with muted gray and pale pink tones above distant bluish-gray hills. In the foreground there is a dark, shadowed ground with patches of deep green and olive vegetation, and a group of tall, narrow trees with dark green foliage and lighter green highlights. On the left edge a small pale-brown curved shape is partly visible, and on the right edge a larger brown animal head with darker brown shading appears. Overall colors visible include dark green, olive, brown, gray, pale pink, and bluish-gray.
