Christina Vasa 1626–1689 in Minerva's costume, painted by Pieter Nason 1612–ca.1688/1690. The identification of the portrayed person is not certain. The helmet, armor, and lance are attributes of Minerva, the Roman goddess of peace and victory, patroness of art and science. The portrait combines iconographic elements of Minerva Pudica and Alma, 17th-century representations of the goddess. The painting has traditionally been recognized as a portrait of Christina, Queen of Sweden, who was called Minerva of the North by her contemporaries. 1663, Netherlands. Portrait; 89 × 69 cm., A framed oil portrait of a woman shown from the waist up, wearing a decorative helmet topped with large white and green plumes, dark curled hair with short ringlets at the forehead, and pearl earrings and a pearl necklace; she has a pale complexion and a neutral facial expression with slightly red lips. She is draped in a golden yellow fabric over armor with scalloped metal plates and green and white sleeves, one sleeve peeking from beneath a rolled white cuff; she holds a long wooden staff or spear with a dark tip and decorative gold bands. The background is a dark oval vignette with a hint of an outdoor landscape visible at one side, and the whole image is set within an ornate carved gold frame. Colors visible include gold, green, white, dark brown, black, pale skin tones, and touches of red.
