The man is depicted from the chest up, wearing a dark military-style coat with decorative shoulder epaulettes and a cloak draped over one shoulder; his hair is medium length and swept back, and his expression is neutral as he looks slightly to his left. The portrait rendering uses shades of black, gray, and white, and the surrounding paper is off-white to cream with a narrow darker border around the sheet. There are subtle speckles and small marks on the paper surface.
