Icon: Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. Nicholas of Myra ca. 270–352. Late 19th century, Russia. Icon, height 11 cm, width 10 cm, depth 0.4 cm. In the center St. Nicholas is shown frontally, in half-length, holding an open Gospel in his left hand and giving a blessing with his right; he wears a phelonion and an omophorion. The saint’s face is broad with a high forehead and a short semicircular beard, and a halo surrounds his head. On either side of Nicholas, diminished in scale and clouded to his knees, are Christ—offering the saint a book—and the Mother of God—offering the omophorion. Stars appear in the background and an identifying inscription is at the top. The whole composition is framed by a wide plant ornament of vines and flowers. The background and frame are covered with blue, navy blue, green, and black enamel., A rectangular metal plate with a small tab at the top center is suspended against a light gray background, showing a worn golden-brass surface with darker brownish patches and vertical scratches, small spots of darker discoloration, and a slightly darker edge along the bottom and sides.
