Processional cross, Ethiopian workshop. Pear-shaped frame depicts Christ on the cross with John and Mary standing at the foot in flat relief. Figures are schematically rendered; Christ is bearded, long-haired, with open eyes, head slightly tilted to his right left shoulder, dressed only in a loincloth, feet nailed with a single nail. Pear-shaped frame decorated with braided-rope pattern and bordered with an openwork braided ornament. Cone-shaped sleeve, flattened on the sides, decorated with a vertical strip of braid and at the bottom with three horizontal strips of checkered, zigzag, and braided patterns. Arms connecting the sleeve with the cross form an openwork braid. 20th century, Ethiopia. Cross; height 40.5 cm, width 16.0 cm., A tall, narrow carved wooden object shown in profile with a scalloped edge running vertically; the wood appears dark brown with lighter brown highlights and a slightly glossy surface; the lower portion features carved geometric patterns and linear incisions wrapping around the base, while the upper scalloped section shows rounded protrusions with worn surfaces; the background is a plain light gray.
