Lekythos with a sphinx, unknown Attic workshop. A small Attic red-figure lekythos with a spout. The neck is narrow; the belly is round, mounted on a round foot. The central part of the front of the belly is decorated with an image of a sphinx; the back has worn finials. 1st half of the 4th century BC, Attica. Vessel; height 9.4 cm, diameter 6 cm., A rounded ceramic vessel with a narrow neck, flared rim, and a single handle connecting rim to shoulder sits against a plain gray background; the surface shows a worn black slip with areas of exposed terracotta creating a mottled pattern, and there is a large round hole on one side of the body; traces of a painted animal motif are visible where the black slip remains, and the handle and rim display chipped edges and flaked areas revealing the underlying tan color.
