Lekythos with a sphinx. Unknown Attic workshop. Ceramic, Attic red-figure lekythos. A small lekythos with a narrow neck, round belly on a round foot. Central front of the belly decorated with an image of a sphinx; back of the vessel has worn finials. 1st half of the 4th century BC. Vessel. Height 9.4 cm; diameter 6 cm., A rounded ceramic vessel with a narrow neck and flared rim sits against a plain light background; the surface shows a mainly black glaze with worn areas revealing a reddish-brown clay underneath, and the body is decorated with a reddish-brown figure of a winged animal with a long tail and spotted body; the neck and rim are black with scattered wear, and the base shows exposed reddish-brown clay and signs of age.
