Lekythos with a sphinx. Small Attic red-figure lekythos, 1st half of the 4th century BC. Narrow neck, rounded belly on a round foot; central front of the belly decorated with an image of a sphinx; back of the vessel has worn finials. Ceramic vessel from Attica. Height 9.4 cm; diameter 6 cm. Maker: unknown Attic workshop., A rounded ceramic vessel with a narrow neck and a flared rim, showing a handle that connects the rim to the shoulder; the surface is predominantly black with worn areas revealing a reddish-brown clay beneath, and there is a painted figure in the reddish-brown color on the body of the vessel depicting a creature with a humanlike head and an animal body with patterned markings; the rim, neck, handle, and base all show patches of wear and chipping, and the background is a pale neutral color.
