Red-figure askos, Attica, 5th–4th century BC. Vessel askos, height 7.0 cm, width 9.1 cm. Shallow, not very high reservoir, bow-shaped handle, low cylindrical neck, spout with outwardly turned edges, flat bottom. Decoration: covered with glossy black varnish; panther facing right with tail curled and paws tucked, and a fawn/goat facing left, running, painted on the shoulders. A thin red line 1–2 cm wide runs around the vessel at the edge of the handles and side walls. Inner surface of the rim covered with varnish. Technology: thick, glossy, well-fired varnish; visible traces of turning; clay cleaned, free of admixtures. Condition: secondary chips on surface, fragment of the rim missing, dirty bottom, visible remains of red sealing wax. Color of clay: 5 YR 6/6 reddish yellow. Color of varnish: 10 YR 2/1 black., A round object viewed from above with a central circular top surface in a warm orange-brown color surrounded by a glossy black rim, showing wear marks and small scuffs on the orange area; a small irregular patch of reddish-orange residue appears near one edge along with some lighter worn spots, and a short black protrusion extends from the lower edge. The visible colors include orange-brown, black, reddish-orange, and small areas of light beige.
