Kantharos, unknown Boeotian workshop. Physical description: Thin-walled kantharos with straight, slightly flared rim edges; a deep cylindrical bowl with an outer edge. The bowl is set on a high leg with a torus in the middle and a flat foot. Band-like, wide handles with slightly raised edges, protruding above the level of the rim. The outer surface of the foot is slightly concave. Decoration: Vessel entirely covered with black varnish. Technology: Matte varnish of good quality, evenly distributed. Traces of turning visible under the varnish. Notes: Numerous secondary losses visible on the surface. Attributed to the 2nd half of the 5th century BC, Boeotia. Kantharos; weight 0.552 kg., A two-handled pedestal vessel with a rounded bowl and flaring rim sits against a neutral background; the body, handles, and foot are primarily black with worn areas revealing brownish and tan underlayers, and there are a few small spots of lighter wear across the surface; the handles curve upward from the rim and have inner hollowed spaces, showing areas of chipped paint along their outer edges, and the bowl’s interior appears dark with subtle circular striations; the pedestal foot is slightly tapered and shows similar black and brown tones with a few worn highlights.
