Statue of Jupiter of the Capitoline type, unknown Roman workshop. Jupiter Zeus seated on a throne set on a rectangular base. Roman sculpture, Roman copy after a Hellenistic variant of Phidias's statue of Zeus the Olympian. Zeus sits stiffly with his torso slightly back; his raised left hand holds a scepter and his right hand rests on his right knee. Right foot slightly forward. Legs covered with a himation that also covers the back and left shoulder. Muscular torso, strongly developed shoulders, with naturalistic modeling. Head disproportionately large; face with slightly open mouth. Hair parted from the center anastole. Thick beard arranged in strands on the sides and in curls on the chin. Late 2nd–3rd century AD. Roman Empire 27 BC–476 AD. Sculpture. Weight 930 kg., A white marble statue of a seated male figure viewed in profile against a gray background, showing a few flowing locks of hair and a beard, an arm raised with a hand holding an unseen object, a draped garment over the shoulders and across the lap with visible folds, a muscular torso and visible legs and feet resting on a rectangular block-like seat, with subtle variations of off-white and pale gray tones on the stone.
