Head disproportionately large; face with slightly open mouth. Hair parted from the center anastole. Beard thick, arranged in strands on the sides and in curls on the chin. Roman sculpture, Roman copy after a Hellenistic variant of Phidias's statue of Zeus the Olympian. Late 2nd–3rd century AD Roman Empire. Sculpture, weight 930 kg., A seated marble statue of a bearded man with long wavy hair, shown shirtless with a draped cloth over his lower body, sitting on a block-like seat; his right arm is raised and bent at the elbow while his left arm rests across his lap, and his feet are bare on a low platform. The sculpture is primarily white and pale gray with subtle darker gray veining and weathered discoloration, set against a smooth gray background. The carved drapery shows flowing folds and the figure displays sculpted musculature and facial detail including a full beard and defined hair curls. The base and seat show rougher carved texture and some chipping.
