Vessel with hieratic inscription, Egyptian pottery. Conical clay vessel tapering toward the pointed bottom; irregular, widest at approx. 3/4 of the height. Narrow, sloping shoulders; short, wide neck; very gently rounded, slightly flaring rim. Handmade with the upper part neck and rim turned. Surface even, outer layer probably covered with engobe. Made of Nile clay NB2 Vienna System. In the central part of the belly are remains of a hieratic inscription in black probably sht dwdw. The vessel is complete and well preserved, with traces of salting on one side of the belly. Old Kingdom, ca. 2686–2181 BCE. Dimensions: height 16.1 cm; rim diameter 6.3 cm; body diameter 8.4 cm. Comparable examples: Petrie, Dendera; Hope, Akhmim type AIVa 2bi; Reisner; Brunton type 77N; Mace, Naga ed-Der; Petrie, Abydos II; Keiser, Avila, Dreyer, Jaritz, Laskowska-Kusztal, MDAIK 40., A rounded, slightly pointed object with a rough, weathered surface in shades of brown and tan is centered against a plain gray background; the surface shows patches of lighter beige and small dark speckles, with a few areas of white encrustation and some irregular pits and texture.
