Protoma; Protoma in the form of a bull’s head relief mask made in gold using repoussé, granulation and filigree; eyes, nostrils and muzzle repoussé and bordered with filigree; small ears and plastically modeled horns horns soldered on; central part with nostrils features granulation and filigree, cheeks and top feature filigree only. Reverse closed with an undecorated gold sheet with an irregular hole in two-thirds of its height from removal of a fastening element. Function: protoma / bull head. Materials: gold; goldsmithing techniques: repoussé, granulation, filigree, soldering. Dimensions: height 9.5 cm, width 7.8 cm, depth 2.5 cm, weight 48 g. Date: ca. 1450–ca. 1100 BC Middle Elamite period ?; alternative datings proposed to Achaemenid period 600–539 BC and to the second half of the 2nd millennium BC. Culture/place of origin: Elam, Iran. Style: Iranian / Elamite art; Eastern Gaulish Scenic noted; masterpiece., The image shows a close-up of a textured metallic object with a detailed, ornate surface in shades of gold and brass against a plain gray background; the surface features a dense pattern of small circular bumps and coiled rope-like ridges, a raised triangular eye-shaped motif with a smooth, polished interior, a curved tubular protrusion wrapped in fine ridges, and a few rounded ear-like forms with punched circular indentations, all displaying variations of gold, bronze, and darker tarnished spots.
