Kylix with a depiction of a mermaid and sphinxes, Griffin-Bird Painter; fantasy creatures iconography: sphinxes, sirens; Greek pottery, Attic kylix, ca. 570–550 BC previous dating ca. 545 BC; vessel; weight 0.314 kg., A shallow, wide bowl on a flared pedestal with a curved handle on each side, shown against a neutral gray background; the upper exterior of the bowl is a warm terracotta color with black painted decorative motifs including sinuous lines and stylized floral shapes, with small areas of red within some motifs, while the lower exterior and pedestal are painted black with areas of wear revealing the underlying terracotta, and the handles show chipped black paint exposing lighter areas.
