Mummy of Panepi in a cartonnage, doorkeeper of the temple of Amun Panepi, Panepi ca. 945β715 BC. Richly decorated cartonnage with sculpturally detailed wig and mask. On the chest is a necklace with plant and geometric ornament; below is a centrally located i3-w fetish mounted on a djed sign, behind which an inscription begins. Flanking the fetish are winged goddesses Isis and Nephthys and the Horuses of Edfu. At the base of the fetish are depictions of Upwawet. Above the fetish is a ram-headed bird with outstretched wings Amun-Ra and Wadjet cobra, Osiris, and three Sons of Horus. The deceased's hands are not modeled. c. 825β715 BC; Third Intermediate Period, late 22ndβ23rd Dynasty, Western Thebes. Sarcophagus/mummy cartonnage. Height 170 cm; width 40 cm; depth 29 cm; weight 37.5 kg., The image shows a tall, elongated painted wooden sarcophagus with a stylized human face and wig at the top; the face and wig area display muted red, dark brown, and green tones, with the wig having patches of teal and darker green. The surface of the coffin is covered with intricate decorative bands and figural motifs painted in a palette of teal, turquoise, green, red, brown, black, and beige, with areas of worn and faded paint revealing the wooden substrate. Near the upper chest area is a large winged motif rendered in teal and brown, and below that are several horizontal registers filled with bird and winged forms, human-like figures, and geometric patterns in similar colors. A central vertical element runs down the length, flanked by repeating bird figures and additional ornamental bands, with visible aging, cracks, and areas where paint has chipped. The lower end tapers and shows more wear and rougher wood texture, with remaining traces of the same color palette.
