Tragic mask, terracotta, 4th/3rd century BC, Southern Italy. Tragic mask depicting a male face, likely a decorative element antefix?. Lower part with beard underside edges flat set at near-perpendicular angle to facial part forming the base. Realistic representation of a theater mask: protruding cheekbones, deep furrows around mouth and eyes; mouth wide open with lower lip almost horizontal and upper lip arched. Large, deep-set eyeballs with circular holes cut out, positioned at slightly different heights right higher than left. Nose slightly hooked with horizontal wrinkles; thick eyebrows; vertical wrinkles in center of forehead; convex forehead. Above the forehead a flat, high onkos with schematically marked locks of hair, bounded at top and sides by folds of cloth. Light orange clay, unevenly fired at fracture turning red. Traces of polychrome—red paint on cheek, black on beard and hair. Upper right part above the forehead has been reconstructed. mask, A weathered curved object with an arching hollow form in shades of beige, tan, off-white, and light brown, showing areas of darker brown and small patches of orange; the surface has rough, flaking texture and worn edges, with a few irregular holes through the arch and some remnants of a patterned decal in muted tan and brown; the object sits against a solid gray background and is reflected faintly on a glossy gray surface below.
