Fragment of a sarcophagus mask. Preserved half of a face made from a single piece of wood. Above the low forehead is a preserved fragment of a wig; below is a recess with remnants of adhesive where an eyebrow made of a different material was probably attached. Almond-shaped eye with preserved eye socket and thick adhesive layer where an inlaid eye was placed. Long, slender nose preserved except for the left cover of the nostril. Mouth with thin lips and slightly upturned corners. Traces of mortar preserved throughout, with minimal remnants of beige paint. On the reverse a stepped niche is carved at mouth level, also showing traces of mortar. The chin has space for a beard. A knot is present on the right cheek. Face height: 17 cm. c. 1400–c. 1295 BC; New Kingdom, late 18th Dynasty decline. Findspot: Deir el-Medina. Sarcophagus mask; overall height 18.5 cm, width 9 cm, depth 4.5 cm., A carved wooden fragment of a human face shown against a plain gray background, with the wood displaying shades of brown and weathered tan; the fragment shows a closed eye with a carved eyebrow and eyelid, a nose with visible nostril detail, and lips forming a subtle expression, with visible wood grain, cracks, rough texture, and areas of lighter and darker brown weathering.
