Fragment of a block with the Sheshonq cartouche; Sheshonq ruler of Egypt; ca. 945–715 BC. Cartouches are ovals of double-wound rope signifying protection; a fragment of the relief shows the cartouche of Pharaoh Sheshonq of the 22nd Dynasty. It is unknown whether this refers to the dynasty's founder the biblical Shishak or to one of four other rulers of this name. Royal cartouches and hieroglyphic texts could be written vertically or horizontally; the characters inside this cartouche point left, indicating the pharaoh's figure faced the same direction. ca. 945–ca. 735 BC; Third Intermediate Period, 22nd Dynasty, Egypt. Bas-relief; height 15.5 cm, width 13 cm, depth 6 cm, weight 1.138 kg., A rough triangular fragment of dark stone with lighter carved grooves forms a rounded rectangular motif on its face; the stone surface shows a speckled texture with visible grain and uneven edges, and the carved lines create stacked horizontal shapes and small rounded depressions within the motif, with some shallow worn areas and chips along the top edge. The colors visible are dark gray and black stone with lighter gray or off-white carved lines and a neutral light gray background.
