Orientalising pyxis with an animal frieze in the Silhouette style, Images of animals; Middle Corinthian period, cats. Thin-walled pyxis with a straight rim, slightly concave body walls, and a flat bottom. Small vices mounted horizontally just near the edge of the rim. The main decorative band, bounded at the top and bottom by a thin line of varnish, depicts figures of animals executed using the silhouette technique. Between the silhouettes there are simplified filling ornaments. Clay color: 5 Y 8/2 pale yellow Varnish color: 5 Y 2.5/1 black Dating: 590–570 BC Middle Corinthian period. Place of origin: Corinth. Dimensions: height 5.3 cm, width 10.2 cm, depth 8.5 cm, weight 0.102 kg., A shallow, cylindrical ceramic vessel sits centered against a gray background, showing a beige base color with black painted decoration; the body flares slightly at the rim which has a couple of small protruding tabs, and the rim edge and interior top band are marked by rows of black dots and short strokes. Around the middle of the vessel a band of black-painted stylized animal figures and abstract motifs encircles the piece, with some figures depicted in profile and others as elongated shapes, and additional black geometric patterns form a sawtooth band near the base and smaller dotted and linear bands above. The overall colors visible are beige, black, and subtle variations of tan and dark brown from wear and shading.
