A Scythian stands before Marsyas, holding a knife in his right hand and beginning to flay him. The scene includes three satyrs and a column with an oval object possibly an omphalos. The composition references the musical agon between Apollo lyre and Marsyas aulos. Origin: Apulia, Basilicate findspot. Dimensions: height 26 cm, width 13.5 cm, weight 0.67 kg., A rounded vase with a narrow flared neck sits against a plain light gray background; the vase is primarily black with extensive reddish-orange and pale cream painted decoration. The neck shows vertical reddish-orange striped banding and thin pale cream dots near the shoulder, while the body features a central scene in reddish-orange and cream on a black ground depicting human figures and an animal-like figure; one human figure on the left appears in a long garment reaching toward the central seated animal figure, and another human figure on the right stands beside a small architectural element holding an object toward the animal. Below the scene a wide decorative band of floral rosette motifs in reddish-orange and cream encircles the vase, and beneath that is a repeating looped pattern in similar colors. The base and the top rim show some surface wear with small areas where the black surface is chipped, revealing lighter underlying material.
