Oinochoe in the shape of a woman's head, Greece, Attica, ca. 450 BC. Oinochoe vessel fashioned from yellowish clay with an orange surface and, in places, shiny black engobe; some elements painted white. The upper part and the headdress are covered with black engobe, on which a white olive wreath stands out. The neck is outlined at the base with a black band. The elongated female face, very carefully modeled, corresponds to the classic Attic head type from the second half of the 5th century. The oval eyes are surrounded by a black outline. The hair is divided by a parting and falls in waves to ear level. The headdress flows into a narrow neck ending in a wide, cup-shaped spout. A cylindrical handle is attached vertically between the rim and the back of the head. Preservation condition: missing engobe in some places, damaged surface. Iconography: head; culture: Greek., The image shows a sculpted pottery vessel in the shape of a human head viewed in profile against a plain gray background; the head has a terracotta-colored face and neck with ochre and pale orange tones, a stylized hair area with reddish-brown and darker brown shading, and a large black painted helmet or headdress with worn patches revealing lighter tan and beige beneath; a curved handle rises from the back of the headdress and shares the same black with tan flecked surface; the facial features include a prominent nose, lips, and a subtle eye area with traces of darker paint, and the base of the neck sits on a narrow circular foot rim that is dark with lighter wear.
