Orientalizing aryballos with a depiction of Hermes, and the Sirens, Otterlo Painter, c. 580–570 BC. Globular aryballos with a wide rim and low neck; foot poorly defined. Decoration covers entire body; radial ornament on shoulders; main field bounded by two thin varnish lines. Walking Hermes, holding a spear between two sphinxes. Precise engraved modelling with many details; sphinx wings and some body parts with red retouch. Small amount of large infill ornamentation. Outer surface of foot covered with varnish; bottom decorated with concentric circles. Technology: matte varnish. Condition: full form but glued; surface contaminated; visible chips and cracks. Clay color 10 YR 8/3 very pale yellow; varnish color 7.5 YR 2.5/1 black; red color 10 R 4/3 weak red. Attributed origin: Corinth, c. 570 BC. Type: aryballos vessel. Height 11.7 cm; diameter 11 cm; weight 0.280 kg; foot diameter 6.5 cm; spout diameter 5.5 cm., A rounded ceramic vessel with a short neck and flared rim sits against a gray background; the vessel surface is mainly beige with large areas of black painted decoration showing a scene of figures in profile with limbs and garments rendered in black, and additional black floral motifs near the base; the rim and base show beige and darker wear, and small patches of reddish-brown appear within the black-painted areas.
