Platter with a gold medallion of Theodosius II, Byzantine workshop. Flat platter on a ring-shaped foot with profiled inner edges. In the central part is a coin of Theodosius II 408–450. Made by casting, probably in a mold of foundry earth; the foot was cast separately and later soldered on. The platter was likely made with a specific coin in mind, as shown by the precisely fitted hole. Gilding on the frame was most likely done using the amalgam chemical gilding technique; parts of the bowl, such as the stripe along the rim, were also gilded this way. The letters of the inscription were struck with single stamps. Ornamentation was applied with punching; spiral elements are additionally joined using boning. Traces of filing smoothing related to the manufacturing technique are visible on the underside of the bowl. After 430, Byzantine/Roman Empire. Vessel; silver with gold; medallion; diameter 18.6 cm; height 2 cm; weight 543.71 g., A circular metallic object with a raised central medalli...
