Head of Dionysus, unknown Italian workshop, 2nd half of the 1st century, Italy, sculpture, A weathered stone sculpted head of a bearded man mounted on a pale rectangular plinth, shown against a smooth gray background; the sculpture has rough, light gray and off-white tones with subtle darker gray shadows in the crevices, the beard and hair are carved with flowing, textured forms and the head is topped by a draped, rounded headdress with curved folds, creating deeper gray areas; the plinth appears creamy off-white with a slightly grainy surface and casts a soft shadow on the flat pale surface beneath.
