Pithos, unknown Egyptian workshop. Storage vessel with an ovoid belly, small annular high foot, and rim with a vertically beveled edge slightly protruding outward. At the point of greatest diameter there is an imprint of the rope used to tie the vessel during drying. Decoration only on the upper part of the belly: on both sides an image of a fish with a short body wider toward the tail—body and tail in side view, head viewed from above with visible eyes separated by a horizontal row of dots; fins rendered with lines. Fish bodies painted white with black contour and detail lines; each fish is flanked top and bottom by wide white lines with thin black lines painted on each. The fish are separated by a vertically painted braid on a white background, framed by black lines, with short diagonal lines terminating in dots. Painted Coptic storage vessel, figural, floral, and impressed decorative elements. 6th–7th century, Edfu. Vessel; height 43.8 cm, width 34.1 cm., A large rounded pottery vessel with a narrow foot and flared rim sits against a plain gray background; the vessel's surface is predominantly terracotta with areas of darker reddish-brown and lighter beige patches, and it shows decorative horizontal banding and linear brush marks in darker brown and black tones, along with some pale whitish accents and worn, textured areas.
