This view of the new north gate in the city walls of Shanghai, named after General Cousin-Montauban, who arrived in the city in 1860, was taken during the period when the joint French and British troops occupied the city prior to the end of the Taiping rebellion. The French flag flies from the tower. To the right of the tower is the City temple hall, which served as the French barracks. A caption printed on Chinese paper has been montaged above the arched gate. It reads: Porte Montauban 1860
