"VICTORY": LADIES TILTING AT THE RING IN TENERIFE, 1897: Tilting at the ring is a favourite amusement with ladies and gentlemen visiting the Canary Islands. At most of the hotels there are courses laid out for tournaments, decorated with flags and foliage, where races and sports of all kinds are indulged in. For tilting, broad silk ribbons or banners on rollers are fixed on a crossbar. At one end of the banner is a ring which hangs below the roll of silk. The tilter has to gallop under the crossbar with his or her lance, and carry away the ring. If the tilter be successful the lance passes through the ring, and the banner unfurls off the roller and floats gracefully behind the competitor.
