Sakurajima is an active 1117-meter volcano located on the innermost part of Kinko Bay and because of a recent eruption that filled the ocean with lava, is now connected to the Osumi Peninsula. A mere five kilometers away on the opposite shoreof the bay is the former castle town of Kagoshima City near to the volcano that frequently emits large quantities of smoke and ash.
