In Greek myth Aphrodite (Venus in Roman) is married to Hephaestus (Vulcan in Roman) in a marriage arranged by Zeus (Jove). Sources vary as to the reason for the marriage, but al agree that Hephaestus/Vulcan has a lame leg and that Aphrodite/Venus does not love him. She has an affair with the god of war Ares (Mars in roman). She also had an affair with the mortals Anchises and Adonis. In this painting by Alexandre Charles Guillemot we see Aphrodite and Ares together with Hephaestus trapping them in a net whilst in the act.
