1909 , FRANCE : The airplane pioneer HENRI FARMAN ( born Henry , 1874 – 1958 ) was an Anglo-French pilot , aviator and aircraft designer and manufacturer with his brother Maurice Farman . In 1907, Farman set a speed record of 52 km h and in 1908 he piloted the longest flight at the time of 1 minute 28 seconds. Both these feats were achieved in a Voisin-Farman biplane . His family was British and he took French nationality in 1937 . The Farman Aircraft company's Goliath was the first long-distance passenger airliner, beginning regular Paris-London ( Croydon Airport ) flights on 8 February 1919 . He was made a chevalier of the French Légion d'honneur ( Legion of Honour ) in 1919 .
