This red-figured vase painting shows ancient Greek youths washing after athletic practice. In the center is a large stone basin. The inscription tells that it is a public institution. Two men are washing themselves. One stands with his hands in the water, the other is scraping himself with a strigil and rubbing his chest. In the background a strigil and flask hang from the wall. On the right, an attendant stands on the edge of a cistern, in the act of pouring water into the basin from a bucket, which he has just drawn with the aid of a rope and windlass. the book dates to 1895.
