He served Francis I, monarch of the House of Valois who ruled as King of France from 1515 until his death in 1547. During the war between Francis I and Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, Bayard was sent to Italy. When his C.O. was wounded in a combat, Bayard assumed command. He repulsed the foremost pursuers, but in guarding the rear between Romagnano Sesia and Gattinara, was mortally wounded.

During the war between Francis I and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, Bayard was sent into Italy with Admiral Bonnivet, who wounded in a combat, implored Bayard to assume command and save the army. He repulsed the foremost pursuers, but in guarding the rear at the passage of the river Sesia between the towns of Romagnano Sesia and Gattinara, was mortally wounded by an arquebus ball on 30 April 1524.
