Wall painting from fuller’s house in Pompeii (three images) and clothes press from fuller’s house in Pompeii. Figure 7 shows four washermen in compartments. Each stands or kneels in a tub of water, three are rubbing and wringing clothes, while the fourth, supporting himself by the partitions, jumps up and down on the clothes. Figure 10 depicts a further stage. The mistress of the shop, or someone else in authority, sits to the left examining a piece of cloth or a scarf which a sewing girl brings to her, In the center, a man is brushing a shirt which hangs from a rack with a brush shaped very much like a curry-comb. On the right a man enters the room with a crinoline-shaped cage, on which an owl is perched. This is the framework on which the woolen clothes were spread to be bleached by sulfur fumes. The sulfur is doubtless in the little pot which the man carries in his left hand. Figure 11: The mistress (hair dressed the same way) appears once more on the left, receiving a piece of cloth from a youth. On the right is a girl seated, apparently cleaning a brush by scraping it with another brush. Figure 12: A clothes-press with two screws. The whole is supposed to be in a dark room, for there is a lamp on a bracket to the left.
