Porto is the second city Portugal after Lisbon. Located on the estuary of the Douro River in Northern Portugal, it is one of the oldest populated centres in Europe. Its historical centre was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. South of the river lies its twin city, Gaia, which hosts most of the numerous wine and port cellars; it is also more populous than Porto itself. Porto is graced by no less than six diverse road and rail bridges crossing the river. In consequence, it is often referred to as the City of Bridges. Here we see two of them - Ponte de S‹o Jo‹o and Ponte Maria Pia - at sunrise.
