Historical etching of Auto de Fe

19th Century engraving of a contemporary illustration of the 15th century Spanish Auto de Fe in the time of Torquemada who was the Inspector General of the Spanish Inquisition in which heretics, Jews and Muslims were condemned to torture and being burnt at the stake. The engraving shows the ritual procession to the punishment that followed a guilty verdict at trial. In this instance the punishment shown is burning at the stake. There are a number of richly dressed men and women observing the procession and punishment. The image is sepia toned and originally from the German book Bilder Atlas published in Leipzig by F A Brockhurst.
