Légende

"W. M. Pearson Knocking Up" sign in window of this house, so could be the proprietor demonstrating. In some areas of northern mill towns in England, workers were woken by the sound of a tap at their bedroom window, a practice that didn't end until the 1970's. A stick was used so that only the household that had paid was woken up.
