Section of the Rosetta Stone. The Rosetta Stone was carved in 196 BC and was found in a small village in the Delta called Rosetta (now Rashid) in 1799. It was translated in 1822 by Frenchman Jean-François Champollion. The text of the Rosetta Stone is a decree from Ptolemy V, describing the repealing of various taxes and instructions to erect statues in temples.
