New York, NY - 11 September 2001 - WORLD TRADE CENTER COLLAPSES AFTER TERRORISTS FLY HIJACKED PLANES INTO TWIN TOWERS - Smoke and flames rise from the Twin Towers in lower Manhattan after one American Airlines and one United Airlines commercial airplanes hijacked by terrorists were flown directly into each tower. The first plane hit at approximate 8:42 am Eastern Standard Time. Officials estimated at the time somewhere that between 20,000 and 50,000 people were in each tower at the time of the attack. Soon afterwards both towers collapsed. The city was shut down a and Mayor Giuliani moved to a secure location. All bridges and tunnels were closed. Subway service ceased and primary elections were canceled. At approximately 9:59 a.m, the south tower, 2 World Trade Center, collapsed after being hit by a plane.
