The statue of Nelson Mandela outside the gates of the last prison he was in prior to his release on the 11th February 1990 It was then the Victor Verster Prison, it is now the Groot Drakenstein Prison or Drakenstein Correctional Centre. This is the site of his walking out of the prison, which occasion was transmitted all over the world. It is now popular with tourists and his house in the prison grounds has opened as a museum to commemorate him.
