'The Bridal Couple (The Jewish Bride)', c1665-c1669, (1967). Alternative title: Isaac and Rebecca. Biblical scene: a couple share a tender moment. To prevent being killed and having his wife captured by King Abimelech, Isaac concealed his love for Rebecca by pretending they were brother and sister. However, their intimacy betrayed them when they thought they were not being spied on. Scholars have established that this type of portrait goes back to Italian Renaissance scenes of marriage or betrothal. Whether the work actually depicts Rembrandt's son Titus (who died in 1668) and his bride can no longer be determined. Painting in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
