'The Conspiracy of the Batavians', 1662, (1967). Alternative title: Conspiracy of the Batavians under Claudius Civilis. Fragment of a larger work. The Batavians, ancestors of the Dutch, swear an oath to their leader in the rebellion against the Romans which took place in 69-70 AD/CE. The one-eyed ruler, wearing a tall blue cap, holds a sword upon which his companions take the oath that they will stand together against their powerful enemy.
