Bale to cloth: the transformation of "tree-wool"..., 1909. '...the treatment of cotton from start to finish: special photographs taken by special permission at Messrs. Jones Brothers' Mills at Bedford Leigh: Bales of compressed cotton as received in Manchester; Opening, or loosening, the cotton: removing impurities by scutching; Carding, which transforms the lap into an untwisted strand, known as a sliver; Drawing, which runs together several slivers and draws them out to the dimensions of one sliver; Slubbing, during which the slivers are drawn out still more, and are wound on bobbins; The spinning-mule, on which both warp and weft are spun [note barefoot child worker]; Winding the yarn off the bobbins on to warper's beams; Sizing, which prepares and strengthens the yarns for the process of weaving; Weaving "Selvyt".'
