The High Street, Marlborough, Wiltshire, c1955. The Polly Tea Rooms (on the left), which opened in 1912, suffered a major fire in 1966 which destroyed the upper floors of the building. The Castle and Ball Hotel dates from the 17th century. During the rebuilding of the town after the Great Fire of Marlborough in 1653, the high street was widened and is often claimed to be the widest in England, though the actual widest is in Stockton-on-Tees.
