The Pont du Gard over the River Gardon, France, c1955. The Roman aqueduct in the south of France is the highest of all elevated Roman aqueducts, and one of the best preserved. It was built in the first century AD/CE to carry water across the river to the town of Nimes, over 50 kilometres (31 miles) away.
