Dios la perdone: y era su madre, (God forgive her. and she was her mother), Plate 16 from 'Los Caprichos', 1799. 'The young lady left her homeland very young: she did her apprenticeship in Cádiz, came to Madrid: she hit the jackpot. She goes down to the Prado, hears a filthy and decrepit old woman begging her for alms, she sends her away; the old woman persists: the fancy lady turns around and finds - who would have thought it? - that the poor woman is her own mother'.
