The Christy Minstrels, 1872. Christy's Minstrels were formed in 1843 in New York by Edwin Pearce Christy. Here, two of the original line-up perform with other actors at St. James's Hall in the West End. Blackface minstrels, ie white performers 'blacked up' in often offensive imitation of Black people, were a popular stage act in Victorian times.
