St Giles, Cripplegate, c1884. 'The photograph shows the tower of the Church, the body of which, on the side of the street, is masked by picturesque houses. The Church contains a modern bust of Milton, who was buried here. In the churchyard, at one time, as may be seen by Archer's Vestiges, very picturesque, but now spoilt by the erection around it of great warehouses, is a bastion, one of the few remaining fragments of London Wall.' Description by Alfred Marks. Fore Street, City of London. Shop signs read: 'W. G. Bunting, Wholesale Retail Manufacturing Stationer, Printer &c., Stationery Warehouse; Valentine Smith, Manufacturer of [tablets & facias?];...Briggs Lees, Funeral Furnisher...'. St Giles-without-Cripplegate is one of the few medieval churches left in the City of London, having survived the Great Fire of 1666. Re-development after the Second World War has resulted in the Church now standing amidst the Barbican complex.
